We have two months worth of CID updates in one this time around along with some annual figures, for those who like figures, issued by the Home Office about crime in southern division, which is Cambridge city, East Cambs and South Cambs. These were held back while the general election was on so they're a little late now.
We're pleased to say between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010, crime was down 11 per cent, equating to 2,947 crimes. Serious acquisitive crime (burglary dwelling, robbery and vehicle crime) was down 16 per cent, all recorded violent crime with injury was down four per cent, serious sexual offences were down nearly 25 per cent and criminal damage was down nearly 19 per cent.
Now for some information on individual investigations:
We charged two burglars with offences in Bourn and Comberton after their fingerprints were found at the scene. They then admitted a further four burglaries. Both of these lads were relatively unknown to the police and had committed the offences whilst being drunk.
We identified a fingerprint at a burglary scene in Cheveley which matched that of a heroin addict from Newmarket. He was charged with the burglary and remanded in custody. He was already out on licence.
We charged a man with a burglary in Foxton after he was spotted by the homeowner climbing out of her window. The lady gave chase, and along with assistance from members of the public, he was detained. Since this arrest a series in the Sawston, Foxton and Duxford area has ceased. The suspect stated that he and two others who he wouldn't name would come up to the county from north London.
Suffolk officers arrested a Cambridge man for burglary. Our officers have been speaking to him and he's so far admitted a further 40 burglaries from across the south Cambridgeshire area. This means 40 victims of crime will be able to finally know who committed their burglary. He was fuelled by an addiction to Crack Cocaine.
We've had a lengthy enquiry into the theft of older motor vehicles in Cambridge. Our suspect owns a tow-truck and drove around the city identifying and then stealing older vehicles which were promptly crushed at a scrap yard. Two detectives figured out what was happening, arrested the suspect who has so far admitted to stealing six cars. There's more enquiries ongoing and we're not giving up, he's done more and we're out to prove it.
Two police officers responded to a call reporting two 'suspicious' characters in the back gardens of properties at 6am in Cambridge city. The officers caught up with them and found them with stolen property relating to nearby burglaries. They were both charged and remanded with two dwelling burglaries.
We arrested and charged a man with burglary then after speaking to him further about his crimes, he admitted another 16. He has since been sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court to 21 months imprisonment.
Three men were charged and convicted for theft from a motor vehicle in Cambridge. A member of the public reported seeing them acting suspiciously so we checked them out. Thank you to those who report these things - as you can see, they often get good results.
Two men were jointly charged with handling stolen goods after a warrant was executed at their Cambridge home, recovering property burglary in the city which happened five days previously.
A well-known burglar was arrested and charged with a burglary Cambridge. He was on licence and went back onto using Heroin, hence he started committing dwelling burglaries again. He pleaded guilty to the burglary and received 2 years and 5 months custody at Cambridge Crown Court.
We charged two burglars with four offences after they were spotted stealing from a Cambridge house. Because our crime scene investigators take samples from crime scenes, we were able to match blood from other burglaries to this pair.
We charged a man and woman from Ely with attempted theft from motor vehicle after their DNA was found.
Another successful prosecution of a burglar from the area at Cambridge Crown Court led to him admitting a total of 51 offences.

The recent warm weather and the approach of the summer months means many people are leaving their windows and doors open, but unfortunately opportunist thieves are seeing this as an invitation to gain access and steal from people's homes. With this in mind, there are a number of simple but effective ways to deter burglars from trying to enter your home.
You can reduce the risk of burglary by:
- Keeping doors and windows shut if you aren't in the room - Thinking about which windows you leave open in hot weather - Keeping ground floor windows locked or fit restrictions so they can only be slightly opened - Remembering some burglars can get through small spaces so, if in doubt, shut and lock it - Ensure all ground floor windows are closed when going upstairs to bed - Keep doors locked even when you are at home - Locking garden equipment and ladders away - Securing sheds with strong padlocks - Use timer switches on lights when you are out to give the impression someone is at home
Please make sure you keep all your window and doors secure in the hot weather. |

Police Community Support Officers – their role explained
We often get asked about the difference between Police Constables and Police Community Support Officers. PCSOs are uniformed staff whose role is to support the work of police officers within the community in Neighbourhood Policing Teams. They are a vital part of these teams and a large part of their role is to patrol in communities and work with organisations like the local councils to tackle the menace of anti-social behaviour.
PCSOs do not have the same powers of arrest as police officers, although they do have the right to detain suspected offenders for up to thirty minutes until a police officer arrives. They also are able to give tickets for certain offences such as parking and littering. You can find out more about the role of a PCSO on our website.
PCSOs Your Questions Answered
We are offering you the chance to have your say on PCSOs and to give us your views, or ask us any questions you might have about their policing role and powers. If you would like to take part in the discussion, simply submit your question or comment to us using the questions link at the bottom of this message.
The closing date for this discussion is the 3rd of June 2010. The answers to all your questions as well as any comments we have received will be posted on the site from the 26th of June 2010.
Kind regards
Cambridgeshire Constabulary.
