PCSO's Update
Written by Rob Gordon
Saturday, 17 July 2010
On Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Pendragon Primary Fete which was a lovely afternoon.

I have attended the Fen Drayton Parish Council Meeting this evening. I am aware that there is both some minor criminal damage taking place both at the village hall and the sports pavillion which I am keeping an eye out for.

We have carried out speeding checks in Cootes Lane, Fen Drayton between 15:55 & 16:40 hours on Wednesday 14th July 2010. Three Endorsable Fixed Penalty Notices (£60 fine and 3 points) for excess speed were issued and 3 drivers travelling slightly over the limit were spoken to and given words of advice.

There has been an attempted theft of fuel from a vehicle down Church Lane in Papworth - so please do keep an eye on your vehicles. I have upped my patrols down this area of Papworth in response to this so if you do see any suspicious activity please phone it through on either 0345 456 456 4 or 999 depending on the urgency.

CID Monthly Update
Written by Rob Gordon
Wednesday, 14 July 2010
Here is your monthly update about how we are tackling serious acquisitive crime (robbery, burglary and vehicle crime) in your area.

As of this morning Serious Acquisitive Crime is showing a 5% reduction (56 offences) against the same period last year. The month to date picture (June 2010 ) was only 2 fewer offences compared to June last year. In one sense this is fantastic work in keeping our crime under control, we now have to focus on our future and that is the world of reducing crime. I'm sure you would all agree that has always been our ultimate destination but with the Home Secretary's speech last week we can see reductions are top of the agenda.

Reductions in crime are achieved by consistent and focussed work by all departments: Reactive / Neighbourhood Teams / CID / CSI / Crime Reduction / Divisional Intelligence Units / Analysts and Researchers / PPO team - the list is endless. Please remember, it’s a minority of people committing a majority of crime - there is much evidence which shows that when all of us work together against an identified problem we can solve it.

We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people being brought to justice for these offences too. Our current year to date detection rate is 15.6% against last year's rate of 7.8%, that's a 100% increase!!!

Burglary remains a focus for the division. For the year to date we have seen a 5% reduction in Dwelling Burglary, that's 22 fewer victims so far. When it comes to vehicle crime we are experiencing a 7.9% reduction, which equates to 50 less offences.

Robbery – The year to date figures for robbery show that we have seen an increase of 23.9%, that’s an extra 16 offences. In the month of June we recorded one more offence than we did last year.

We are now looking at the way in which these offences are recorded as what can at first appear to be a robbery is infact some other type of crime.

For example already we have seen two offences in the last five days which proved not robberies at all. One was a false report to gain a DSS funded emergency loan and the second was an assault with no linked theft.

Here you can see recent examples of people being brought to justice by Cambridgeshire Police for committing these types of crimes:

Two men have been charged with attempted burglary in Cambridge after their suspicious behaviour was photographed by a passer by.

A man is currently on bail after being arrested on suspicion of three robberies against taxi drivers. He is actually in prison at this time after being recalled there in connection with other offences.

A man has been arrested and charged after his fingerprints were found on index plates which had been stolen from a vehicle in Cambridge City. These plates were then placed onto another vehicle which was involved in an incident whereby a Police vehicle was rammed.

We arrested and charged a man after he sold a bike stolen in a burglary at Barton Close to Cash Converters.

Another well known burglar has been charged with burglary and remanded after a burglary in the Sutton area. He is getting on in years but just because they're older doesn't mean they're not offending!

We have arrested and charged a man who we have been watching and wanting to catch for a long time. He has been charged with committing two burglaries in Cambridge. A lot of officers have been involved in detaining this man and I am very pleased he will go before the courts.

A man has admitted carrying out a burglary in Cambridge after his DNA was found at the scene. He has also admitted to another count of a theft from a motor vehicle.

Two men have been charged with a robbery which was committed in Cambridge in December after officers put together a case involving phone data.

A man has been jailed after he was charged with stealing seven vehicles in the Cambridge area.

A man is due to be charged with a burglary at a cottage in Ely which he has admitted to. He will be coming in by appointment with a solicitor.

A man is awaiting sentence after admitting to over 20 burglaries in the Cambridge area. He has been remanded in the meantime.

If you have anything to report to police please call 0345 456 456 4 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Rogue Traders
Written by Rob Gordon
Wednesday, 14 July 2010
"the moss on your roof needs removing otherwise it will cause damage..."
“you've got a loose tile on your roof..."
"I have some tarmac left over from a job..."
"we were working on your neighbours when we noticed..."
"the trees in your garden need cutting back otherwise..."

These are some of the false claims made by rogue traders who have cold called to persuade people to pay for services or goods they do not want or need.

Rogue traders target the elderly and vulnerable, and deliberately overcharge for unsatisfactory, unnecessary or even no work at all. Work is often left unfinished, property damaged and sometines intimidation is used to obtain money. People have even been taken to the bank to withdraw their savings.

We are working with Trading Standards and other agencies to stop and arrest these unscrupulous ‘traders’. But we need your help!
Have you had cold callers knock at your door touting for business?
Have you had flyers advertising services put through your letter box and still have them?
Are there any ‘traders’ that you are unsure about in your area?
Do you suspect your neighbour is being targeted and ripped off by a ‘trader’?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions - we want to know details of the ‘traders’ and their vehicles.

Contact police on 0345 456 456 4 or Trading Standards Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. In an emergency always dial 999. Send any flyers to Adrian Love at Cambridgeshire Trading Standards, Cambridgeshire County Council, PO Box 450, Cambridge, CB23 6ZR.
